A Modica-Mortola approximation for branched transport

چکیده

The Mα energy which is usually minimized in branched transport problems among singular 1-dimensional rectifiable vector measures with prescribed divergence is approximated (and convergence is proved) by means of a sequence of elliptic energies, defined on more regular vector fields. The procedure recalls the Modica-Mortola one for approximating the perimeter, and the double-well potential is replaced by a concave power.

A Modica-Mortola approximation for the Steiner Problem

In this note we present a way to approximate the Steiner problem by a family of elliptic energies of Modica-Mortola type, with an additional term relying on a weighted geodesic distance which takes care of the connectedness constraint. Résumé. Dans cette note nous présentons une méthode d’approximation du problème de Steiner par une famille de fonctionnelles de type Modica-Mortola, avec un term...

Spectral approximation of pattern-forming nonlinear evolution equations with double-well potentials of quadratic growth

This paper is concerned with the analysis of a numerical algorithm for the approximate solution of a class of nonlinear evolution problems that arise as L gradient flow for the Modica–Mortola regularization of the functional u ∈ BV(T; {−1, 1}) 7→ E(u) := γ 2 Z

Multiphase Image Segmentation via Modica-Mortola Phase Transition

We propose a novel multiphase segmentation model built upon the celebrated phase transition model of Modica and Mortola in material sciences and a properly synchronized fitting term that complements it. The proposed sine-sinc model outputs a single multiphase distribution from which each individual segment or phase can be easily extracted. Theoretical analysis is developed for the Γ-convergence...

On the Γ-limit of Joint Image Segmentation and Registration Functionals Based on Phase Fields

A classical task in image processing is the following: Given two images, identify the structures inside (for instance detect all image edges or all homogeneous regions; this is called segmentation) and find a deformation which maps the structures in one image onto the corresponding ones in the other image (called registration). In medical imaging, for instance, one might segment the organs in t...

Variational models for phase transitions An approach via Γ-convergence

This paper is an extended version of the lecture delivered at the Summer School on Differential Equations and Calculus of Variations (Pisa, September 16-28, 1996). That lecture was conceived as an introduction to the theory of Γ-convergence and in particular to the Modica-Mortola theorem; I have tried to reply the style and the structure of the lecture also in the written version. Thus first co...
